Waterview Swim Team could not exist without volunteers. Interested in helping out but don't know
who does what?
Announcer - This person is equipped with a microphone and reads off the swimmers in
each lane for each race.
50/50 Sales - These people wander around the swim meet selling 50/50 raffle tickets.
Timers and Backup Timers - Each lane has 2 or 3 timers who are each equipped with a
stopwatch. Timers time each race and tell the runner the resulting time.
Runners - These people collect the times from each lane and placement results from an official. This information
is then dropped off at the scorekeeping table.
Ribbon Writers - These people fill out the information tag on the back of
each ribbon.
Age Group Helpers - one for each gender for the younger age groups, i.e. "Girls 7-8".
Before the meet starts, the helper is given a meet schedule which lists all the kids in each event. The helper is also given a
sign with the age group on it. It is the helper's job to find those kids for his/her group for each event. The clerk of course will
come and get those particular kids when it is time to put them in lineup.
Note: Kids 12 years and older usually just ask the clerk or helper and line themselves up.
Clerks of Course - usually 2 per meet.
Before the meet starts, the helper is given a meet schedule which lists all the kids in each event. It is the clerks job to get the kids
in the correct lineup for each event. Prior to an event, the clerk will go to the appropriate helper, take the kids for that event, and put them in the lineups.
An Example of How Lineups Happen
Pam is the Age Group Helper for Girls 9/10.
Gladys is one of the Clerks of Course.
Pam is standing in the grassy area near the shed.
Pam checks her schedule and sees the Girls 9/10 Backstroke event is coming up.
Pam sees that she needs Jennifer, Shannon, Megan, Anastasia and Nicole.
Pam already has Anastasia and Nicole with her but needs the others.
Pam holds up her sign, calls out for Girls 9/10 Backstroke which brings Jennifer and Megan.
Pam still needs Shannon, so she looks and finds Shannon playing cards on the grass.
Pam checks her schedule and lines up the girls according to their heat and lane.
Gladys checks her schedule and sees Girls 9/10 Backstroke Heat 1 is coming up.
Gladys finds
Pam who has all the Girls 9/10 Backstroke swimmers.
Gladys's schedule lists Nicole (Lane 1), Jennifer (Lane 3) and Shannon (Lane 5) for Heat 1.
Gladys takes Nicole, Jennifer and Shannon and puts them in their particular lanes.
Gladys goes back to
Pam and gets the remaining girls and puts them in their lanes.
